The Ethics of Abortion The Ethics Of Abortion is a very controversial subject that has been continually argued over for the past few years and probably many more years to come. The main controversy is should abortion remain legalized? Before we get into the many sides of abortion we must first define abortion. Abortion is the destruction of the fetus or unborn child while the child is still in the mother’s womb. This can be done by almost anyone from the mother herself to back alley abortions and even to abortions by clinics set up especially for this purpose. There are two sides to this abortion topic, the PRO-LIFE, which is those who are against abortion altogether and the PRO- CHOICE or those who believe it is the woman’s right to†¦show more content†¦This also will bring out the chauvinistic side of me but I also feel the woman is more responsible for providing birth control. If a pregnancy occurs because of rape and the woman was not allowed to abort it th en I feel that numerous lives would be affected. The woman who has this child would feel the emotional and possibly the physical scars for the rest of her life. This would be carried on to the child and probably onto any future relationships and future children she might have. Every one is not the same, some women might be able to handle the situation with little difficulty and some might have great difficulty. I believe this is the main reason to be Pro- Choice. Now lets talk about the other reasons why abortion should remain legalized. I feel if a woman is pregnant for any reason and she does not want the child or to go full term, then abortion should be there as an option. If it is not an option then women would find a way to abort on their own, which would be very unsafe to her own welfare. The old coat hangar trick or throwing yourself down a flight of stairs should not be an option because there are no other alternatives available. Anyway, If the pregnancy is made to go full t erm because of these Pro- Lifers, then I feel many of these babies will be born into families that not only doesn’t want to care for them but can’t care for them. The Things They Carried written by Tim O’Brien - 2046 Words

A Corrupted Moral In works such as the novel The Things They Carried written by Tim O’Brien and the movie Full Metal Jacket directed by Stanley Kubrick, we see the hardships soldiers had to pass through during training and the Vietnam War. As it is stated in O’Brien’s book â€Å"They carried all the emotional baggage of men who might die. Grief, terror, love, longing – these were intangibles, but the intangibles had their own mass and specific gravity, they had a tangible weight† (O’Brien 20). After stating all of the things they actually carried O’Brien makes reference to them carrying emotional weight, to let the reader know that there was more to the war than fighting. They had other reasons to be there, such not wanting to be titled as cowards for not enlisting themselves in the war. In Full Metal Jacket the emotional weight they have on themselves is also visible throughout the whole movie. The emotional burden caused some of the soldiers such as Private Leonard Lawrence to enlist in the training although he clearly was unfit for the job. This resulted in an amazing turn of events since due to intrinsic motivation to not be the source of everyone’s laugh, he becomes someone completely different. At the end of the first part of the movie Pvt. Lawrence was no longer that unfit soldier we see at the beginning, he had changed to be a vicious person with a death wish. In Germany, the proportion of women employed stood at 52.4 percent in the year 2015 and had grown significantly in the last two decades in countries like France, Chile, Mexico, and Algeria (Ospina Tzvetkova, 2017). It is important to note that women are not just seeking formal and informal employment but are actively venturing into their own businesses. The entrepreneurial spirit among women has been on the rise in both high-income and low-income countries. In the USA, for instance, the number of businesses owned by women grew by over 50 percent in the year 2007 and employed over 12 million Americans (Quast, 2011). The Driving Force So, as opined above the number of women participating in the workforce has grown significantly. However, the question begs, what is the driving force behind this growth? More women are getting educated today than ever before. According to WGEA (2018), 92 percent of women between the ages of 20-24 years in Australia have achieved education comparable to year 12 or above which is 4 percent higher than men in the same category. The same applies to higher education where women acquiring bachelor degrees exceed the men. This enables them to acquire jobs easily (Johns, 2013). Government legislation and labour laws are also making it easier today for women to work be competitive in the job market. In many countries, there are laws regulating the gender involvement in workplaces, for example, Rwanda and Kenya where the laws require that neither gender can exceed two-thirds majority in public offices (Ospina Tzvetkova, 2017). In Australia, the Fair Work Act makes all workers attain similar pay for work. In the USA the Equal Pay Act allows women be paid competitively to the men which is a big motivation for women to find work (Morgan, 2017). In the last two decades, the developed countries particularly the USA and many countries in Europe are moving from the manufacturing sector which was male domineered to service sector which favors women (Quast, 2011). The assertiveness of women and agitation for their rights has grown in the last two decades. More than ever before women are demanding equality in the workforce and as well as other sectors (Johns, 2013). A case in point is the recent "me too" movement that exposed unfairness and malpractices in many workplaces in the USA. There are many other factors that have led to more women participating in the workforce such as affirmative action initiatives fronted by many NGOs to support women acquire education and jobs. Many feminist movements have also been fighting for women involvement in jobs, for instance, Maya Angelou, Hillary Clinton, and Betty Friedan have been encouraging more women to challenge the status quo that is men dominance in workplaces (Fisher, 2017). Organizations with more women have also recorded higher performance in terms of Return on investment, increased profits and higher sales margin hence many organizations are employing more women (Quast, 2011). Glass ceiling hindering the advancement of females in many organizations Despite the many achievements women have made over the last two decades, there still exist many barriers. Even though the workforce globally has reached an average of 40 percent, some countries are still lagging behind in empowering women (Johns, 2013). In India, at a glance, the number of women in the workforce is only 20% compared to men whereas in Algeria the proportion of women in the workforce is just 12 percent. Furthermore, the going gets twisty the higher up you go in managerial positions in many workplaces. Globally, women occupy about 7 percent of middle and higher management positions (Zhao Smith, 2015). In Australia for instance, women hold about 13 percent of chairperson roles, 16 percent of chief executive officer positions and about 24 percent directorate positions (WGEA, 2018). Similarly, less than 5 percent of women head the Fortune500 organizations (Zhao Smith, 2015). In the midst of all that women have achieved, why the glass ceiling? One might ask. The reasons are as quite diverse depending on where you inquire. However, there is a common agreement on a number of reasons. Firstly, the organization culture in many organizations favours men when it comes to leadership roles. Secondly, the traditional practices in many countries still suppress women from seeking leadership roles and thirdly women lack the extensive network of mentors that men enjoy (Stuckey, 2015). According to Sherwin (2014), women are less likely to step up the corporate leadership ladder for the fact that they have to balance many responsibilities such as family, aging parents, and their personal lives more extensively than men who therefore find it easier to handle the roles even when overseas travel is required. Zhao and Smith (2015) opine that the perceptions in many workplaces associate top management roles with men to the detriment of the women. They also observe that women lack the assertiveness to gloom themselves for leadership roles. Finally, many organizations discriminate women based on colour, race or religion. This may be done openly or covertly. The end result is that women, however qualified, cannot progress on leadership roles due to the looming perceptions (Johns, 2013). Strategies that may assist the advancement of females in the organizations Mentoring of women can go a long way into honing their skills for future management roles. In organizations like IBM and Deloitte, top managers identify and mentor women to take up leadership positions (Stuckey, 2015). Training women in diverse aspects of management within the organization is also a strategy that can be used to improve the confidence in women to take up leadership positions (Ospina Tzvetkova, 2017). Organizations can also come up with flexible work patterns for women. This can take the form of allowing women to work from home and offering women remote work to enable them to have a work-life balance (Zhao Smith, 2015). Companies can also employ a systems approach to promoting women at the workplace by coming up with gender-friendly hiring practices where some leadership roles in the company are set aside for women (Sherwin, 2014). Organizations can also encourage networking opportunities for women. As already discussed, women fail to take leadership positions because they lack networking possibilities open to men. Increasing the networks for women would encourage them to take management positions referred by their networks. They should also be strict on discrimination of women based on colour, race, or creed (Johns, 2013). Other strategies can include educational support for women especially management studies, organizational culture change to appreciate women management, direct support for the families where organizations like Google have nanny and catering programs and career succession plans targeting women would improve their chances of advancing to managerial roles (Lathabhavan Arasu, 2017). Conclusion This paper examines the progress of women in contributing to the workforce. It reveals the trends relating to women in the workforce in the last two decades. It reveals that women have been able to command an average global workforce of 40 percent compared to the men. The paper explores the barriers limiting the advancement of women particularly in leadership roles in many organizations. Ferguson and Danckert (2016b) has also highlighted the scandal relating to the failure by the convenient store to pay state payroll tax (par. 1). The NSW and Victoria state government have opened investigations on the company and its franchisees. For instance, the issue over paying employees $5 per hour was the worst wage fraud scandal. Apart from underpaying the workers, the company is accused of failing to act on bullies. the bullying tactics has affected the firm because employees are intimidated and threatened. For example, Franchisee Helen Ren was compelled by the head office staff to sign termination contract (Ferguson Danckert 2016). Willacy (2016) also shared a video on how workers of the company were forced to payback wage in cash (par. 1). therefore, the organization seems to have contravened the state and commonwealth taxation laws. The falsification of the records of employees is also rampant in major convenient retailers across Australia. These actions expose unethical leadership culture that needs to be investigated and assessed. Ren Zhengfei and Leadership Style Zhengfei has turned Huawei into the leading for-profit organization. He represents the heroic leaders in the world who have responded to opportunities and changes in the market, economy, customers, and society. The CEO has designed effective strategies that had made the company a successful investment story. Since its inception in 1987, Huawei has battled for space in China (De Cremer Tao 2015b). the fighting spirit of the CEO made the company to resist negative influence that making it a true international Chinese company. By 2014, the companys revenue and profits were $46.515 billion and $4.29 billion respectively (De Cremer Tao 2015a). Given the Huaweis success, it is important to interrogate the driving force and philosophy of the management. The CEO has established a long-lasting blueprint to take the company to a higher level. The rotating leadership system embraced in the company that has seen leaders rotate after every six months has had a significant impact on the performance (Irving Longbotham 2007). Zhengfeis leadership is purpose-driven because he has been clear regarding the purpose of the organization. This has helped the customers to recognize their dreams. Zhengfei has thus made the companys natural mission by being good to customers thus connecting to the customers through communication. Zhengfei is an inspirational business leader that has made him inspire workers. he is an aerator who uses stories to encourage others. he used his leadership ability to mentor and lead employees in achieving the organizational goals. in the Chinese context, leadership is founded on a hierarchical top-down management system (De Cremer Tao, 2015a, par. 9). However, Zhengfei has opted for a directive management style because he enjoys the ability to make all the decision. Indeed, the Huawei is a controlling leader because of his army background, where he served as a member of the Peoples Liberation Army. Zhengfei retains the authority on various decisions such as culture building and corporate development strategies. Interestingly, he has empowered his employees relating to manager appointment, RD, benefit and compensation allocation. This has allowed the managers to be creative and active. Zhengfei uses a standardized institutional decision-making model because the collective decision-making establishes an opportunity for collective wisdom and fewer mistakes. The CEO has created a culture that allows winning by cooperating (De Cremer Tao 2015a). Jack Ma and Management Style Alibaba is one of the online companies that has improved and implemented management systems based on different styles that fit different companies worldwide. The online company founded by Jack Ma embraces the autocratic management styles that have made its workers more responsive because of the nature of work (Pyne 2016). Indisputably, the concept of authoritarian leadership denies employees their freedoms, in particular, during decision-making process. McGregor (2014) affirms that Jack Ma changed his leadership style by adopting a conducive management approach. The move has helped him build a strongly loyal and motivated workforce. According to Ee and Yazdanifard (2015), Jack Ma has mastered the persuasive leadership model throughout his career at Alibaba. The richest Chinese investor, Jack Ma (Ma Yun) founded this internet-based company as a business of convention. For instances, it only connects businesses thus acting as a marketplace (Li 2008). The significance of this business i s founded on the quality suppliers with trustworthy ratings. Alibaba has remained successful because of the autocratic management model. To the founder, this important management system has enabled it to remain relevant and successful in the market. Previously, the founder, Jack Ma made various experiments various management styles before settling on the autocratic model (Ee, Yazdanifard 2015). Jack Ma recognizes the challenges many managers experience due to inflexibility. According to McCleskey (2014), an autocratic management style allows the leaders to reach unilateral decisions without consider the input of other stakeholders. Therefore, the decisions made reflect the personality and opinions of the leader (Hsu 2013). However, as the organization expanded, the company attracted experts who brought new ideas. The founder had to accommodate them by introducing a conducive management style. Jack Ma knew that the inputs of the experts would be relevant if the management was open to them. To this effect, Jack Ma created an environment that al lowed teamwork to thrive (Gough 2014). Nonetheless, the conducive management was also dictatorial because the executive decisions were made after considering the interests of workers as explained by Willacy (2016). The dictatorial and autocratic management models reduce employees to spectators. In fact, they depend on the leaders or managers for everything (Prez-Cerezo 2013). However, Jack Ma recognized the need to change the management style to meet the anticipated outcome. He later embraced persuasive management style that he has embraced in his career at the company (Li 2008). The organization needs to avoid using the top-down leadership approach in handling the managerial duties. With the changes experienced today, the convenient store should move fast and develop the best culture that embraces workforce input. The leadership must accept these changes and allow workers to work in a good environment. By creating the team culture and adopting a structure that implements delegation, or establishing a horizontal organizational structure, it would be prudent for the firm to avoid issues with employees. Conclusion 7-eleven requires proper strategies to redeem its image relating to the leadership ethics. The company has been blamed for engaging in underhand dealings such as mistreating workers. Despite the companys mission of serving clients with quality services, the organization has failed in this mandate. Recently the company has been blamed of violating the Fair Work Act 2009 by paying its employees as low as $5 dollars per hour. This unacceptable practice taints the companys image. The company has also violated the taxation laws in different countries that have exposed it to various legal battles. Based on this article, it is evident that the convenient store should adopt the best leadership approaches to redeem its image. For instance, Alibaba and Huawei have employed successful management culture to succeed in their respective industries. Despite the companys focus on servant leadership, its managers, especially the lower managers have used autocratic leadership where managers are never questioned by the subordinates.
